Step One - Science

Living Things: How Plants Drink
In 3rd, 4th and 5th class we did a science experiment on plants to show that they have veins too. So we got some celery and flowers, a jar of water and some food colouring (dark colours recommended). What happened was if you put the food colouring into the jar of water and the celery/flowers and left it for a few days you will see that the food colouring travelled up the celery/flowers veins if you half it ! What we learned that plants have veins too! We invited the 1st and 2nd class to come too see what happened - it was great fun! Look at our photos to see what happened. Documented by Leah G |
Step Two - Technology
This website is brought to you courtesy of the pupils and staff of Kilnadeema National School.
We complete the work and our principal helps us to upload it to the website using education.weebly.com. With a little help, its easy maintain our website! We also have starting coding during our BYOD Friday activities. We like to use the website Hourofcode.com. One student uses his eye gaze system to complete his work. |

Powering our World with PowerPoint!
We also use PowerPoint to present our work in class. Following a science lesson we decided to do a PowerPoint on Weather and Climate and make a presentation to children in 1st and 2nd Class. Click here to see our PowerPoint!

Step Three - Engineering
As part of our science programme we learned all about different types of bridges using ICT.
To put what we learnt into practice we then built our own bridges using paper, books and coins. We put two books standing up on their sides and we placed the paper in different positions. We folded up the sides for some and for others we left it with no folds. We placed a coin on it then to see which bridge worked best. For the flat paper it fell straight down but with two sheets of paper with the sides folded up it held much better. Overall this was a fun way to see and learn about bridges. Documented by Ellen

Step Four - Maths
Maths Trail Juniors, Seniors, 1st and 2nd Class did a maths trail. They had a sheet and they had to answer the questions finding the answers around the school. They were put into teams of four with one person from each class on the team. They had an enjoyable time!!! Look at the photos to see them on their trail! Documented by Leah & Jessica |

Step Five - STEM Showcase
Rocket science
We did a science project in school. We made rockets out of balloons, a straw, string and chairs. We put the straw on the string and tied the string to the chairs. Then we taped the balloon to the straw and the balloon was blown up. When everything was ready we let go of the balloon the balloon travelled across the string to the other side. We learned that rockets move with the force of the fuel coming out. We used balloons because the air comes out really fast and it moves the balloon. We invited 5th and 6th, Juniors and Seniors into our room to see our experiment. Marie explained it to the other children. We really enjoyed this experiment.
